Engaging Employees in Sustainability

While 84% of employees believe companies should address environmental issues, a recent survey by Wade Macdonald reveals a stark contrast. Around 43% of business leaders still don't factor sustainability into their decisions!

This emphasises the need for a strategic and holistic approach to employee engagement in sustainability.

Toni McKee (Director of Stakeholder Engagement) and Richard Dixon (Chief Digital Officer) recently teamed up with People Made co-founder Brook Calverley to discuss how businesses can better engage and motivate their employees around sustainability.

Here is a summary of their blog – and a link to read the full article.

Employees want action: 84% believe companies should address environmental issues, but current efforts often fall short due to skepticism and information overload.

The importance of a strategic and consistent approach to employee engagement in sustainability, moving beyond mere awareness to action and lasting change, is absolutely key to success.

Top 5 learnings from the webinar:

  1. Plan: Define a clear, consistent sustainability strategy aligned with your business goals.
  2. Narrate: Craft a compelling story explaining your "why" and "how" of sustainability.
  3. Act: Turn engagement into action by empowering employees to make a difference through their daily tasks.
  4. Embed: Integrate sustainability throughout the employee journey, from recruitment to exit.
  5. Tailor: Measure engagement differently for diverse employee groups to ensure everyone is reached.

Bonus tips:

  • Be patient, behaviour change takes time.
  • Lead by example with strong manager role models.
  • Celebrate milestones to keep motivation high.
